Phonetic Convergence after Perceptual Exposure to Native and Nonnative Speech: Preliminary Findings Based on Fine-grained Acoustic-Phonetic Measurement
نویسنده
چکیده
This study investigates phonetic convergence by native English speakers after exposure to speech by a native or a nonnative speaker of English. Participants 1) read two word sets, 2) were exposed to one of the word sets either through auditory (experimental group 1 & 2) or visual inputs (control groups 1 & 2), and 3) read both word sets again. Preliminary results showed a tendency for participants to converge towards nonnative models but not towards native models, and to show no specificity of phonetic convergence patterns between the word sets they heard and the word sets did not hear.

Infant Dialect Discrimination
In order to understand speech, infants must differentiate between phonetic changes that are linguistically contrastive and those that are not. Research has shown that infants are very sensitive to fine-grained differences in speech sounds that differentiate words in their own or another language. However, little is known about infants’ ability to discriminate phonetic differences associated wit...
متن کاملEffects of acoustic–phonetic detail on cross-language speech production
Nonnative sounds and sequences are systematically adapted in both perception and production. For example, American English speakers often modify illegal word-initial clusters by inserting a vocalic transition between the two consonants (e.g., (/bdagu/? [bdagu]). Previous work on such modifications has for the most part focused on relatively abstract properties of the nonnative structures, such ...
متن کاملPhonetic convergence and language talent within native-nonnative interactions
The notion of phonetic convergence covers all adaptations in articulatory and acoustic features towards those of a communicative partner, or in other terms an increase in segmental and suprasegmental similarity between them (Pardo 2006). Up until now most of the experiments on convergence were designed for monolingual dyads, with very few investigations of convergence in native-nonnative intera...
متن کاملMeasuring phonetic convergence in speech production
Phonetic convergence is defined as an increase in the similarity of acoustic-phonetic form between talkers. Previous research has demonstrated phonetic convergence both when a talker listens passively to speech and while talkers engage in social interaction. Much of this research has focused on a diverse array of acoustic-phonetic attributes, with fewer studies incorporating perceptual measures...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
